Broken Garage Door Spring?

Common signs of a broken spring:

  • A loud bang from the garage
  • The door suddenly feels very heavy
  • It opens only a few inches
  • A visible gap in the spring above the door
  • Cables look loose
  • The opener strains to lift the door

Stop using the door.

Do not remove, wind, unwind or adjust garage door springs without proper tools and training. They hold enough tension to cause serious injury.

Don't keep running the opener with a broken spring — it can damage the opener and the door can drop. Leave the door where it is and keep people and vehicles clear.

One symptom alone doesn't confirm a broken spring. A proper inspection does.

How springs work

The spring does the heavy lifting.

Your door can weigh well over a hundred pounds. The springs counterbalance that weight so the door — and the opener — only have to move a fraction of it. That's the counterbalance system.

  • Torsion springs sit on a shaft above the door and twist to store energy.
  • Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks and stretch as the door closes.
  • Every cycle wears the steel. Over time springs weaken and eventually break — often in cold weather.

Good to know

Questions, answered.

Still unsure? Call (888) 888-8888 and talk to a real person.

01

Can I open my garage door with a broken spring?

It isn't recommended. The door is far heavier without spring support and can fall. Leave it closed if possible and call a professional.
02

Why do garage door springs break?

Normal wear. Each open-and-close cycle fatigues the steel. Rust and cold weather can speed that up.
03

Should both springs be replaced?

On doors with two springs, replacing both is often recommended so they wear evenly. We'll explain what makes sense for your door.
04

Is a broken spring the only reason a door won't lift?

No — cables, tracks and openers can cause similar symptoms. See garage door repair.
