Common symptoms

What's your opener doing?

  • Motor runs, door doesn't move

Often a stripped gear, a disconnected trolley or a broken spring.

  • Remote doesn't work

Batteries, programming, lock mode or a failing receiver.

  • Wall control issue

Wiring, the button itself or the opener's logic board.

  • Door reverses

Sensors, force settings or something binding in the door.

  • Door won't close

    Usually sensor alignment or obstruction.

  • Sensors acting up

Blinking lights, misalignment, sun glare or damaged wires.

  • Opener is noisy

Worn drive parts — or a door that's hard to move.

  • Stops before finishing

Limit settings, force settings or a door imbalance.

  • Wi-Fi / smart control problem

Connectivity, app setup or a failing module.

Important

Sometimes it isn't the opener.

An opener is designed to move a balanced door, not lift its full weight. Many apparent opener problems are really caused by:

Repair vs. replacement

What we weigh.

There's no hard age limit. We look at the whole picture:

  • Age and overall condition
  • Availability of replacement parts
  • Type of failure
  • Noise level
  • Safety features
  • Smart controls
  • Battery backup
  • The condition of the garage door itself

If replacement makes sense, see garage door openers for the options.

01

Why does my opener hum but the door won't move?

It can be a stripped drive gear, a disengaged trolley, or a broken spring making the door too heavy. Don't keep pressing the button.
02

Why does my garage door reverse before closing?

Usually the safety sensors are misaligned or blocked. Force settings or a binding door can also cause it.
03

Is it worth repairing an older opener?

Sometimes. It depends on the part that failed and whether it's still available. We'll give you honest options.
